Fine Artist, New Street Studios, Grimsby.

About Dale

Dale was born in Cleethorpes, but as many say 'was made in Grimsby' having spent all his working and married life in the Great Grimsby town.

Dales has been a practising artist for nearly 30 years learning most of his artistic skills from the great School of Art that was 'Eleanor Street' then moving onto Hull School of Art and Design where he studied part time for six years ending in a B.A. Hons in Fine Art.

Looking for studio space he came across an advert advertising resident artists for a local art gallery, this was unheard of in Grimsby and little did he know that it would be a defining moment in his journey as an artist.

The gallery in question was no other than Abbey Walk Gallery run by two enthusiastic artists themselves, Gill and Elaine.

A full chapter could be written about what this small dedicated gallery did for the artists and culture lovers of Grimsby and surrounding areas and the ten years that was spent at AWG established Dale's career as an artist, meeting people and other artists and selling his work on a regular basis.

Sadly AWG had to close its doors and another chapter began at New Street Studios.

Most of Dale's work at that time consisted of local scenes of Grimsby's Fishing Industry painted in a contemporary way mostly with a palette knife which was to become his preferred way of painting.

He now chooses his subjects according to his own psychological response to certain places and people rather than a desire to photographically render what lies before him.

Over the last ten years his work has developed with each new project and Dale's new body of work retains the essential essence of previous works, yet he attempts to further push the boundaries of colour, subject matter and the content to a new level, be it a fishing heritage painting or a wind turbine that has become part of the modern day feature of the local land and seascapes.

The last couple of years 2020 – 2022 have been very challenging for the Arts and Culture industry as with most industries time just about stood, yet even at home people found a way to express themselves.

During 2020 was the 75th anniversary of the ending of WW2 and working from home he started on a series of paintings of 'The Unsung Heroes' of WW2 culminating in a number of exhibitions in 2021 and hopefully continuing into 2022 as he constantly adds to the collection.

As mentioned Dale now has his own studio at New Street Studios at 1 Town Hall Square, Grimsby, inside the Carers Support Building which he shares with fellow artist Terry Clarke.
