About the project
A colorful mural on a building, labeled

Seans' passion for design started at a very early age and one of the places that always inspired him was the Docks. From the age of four or five, He’d always be ‘down Dock’ with his Dad and be in awe at the vibrant colours, shapes, flags and funnel emblems.

Now nearly 50 years later and still with that same passion for design ‘All That Remains Is An Echo’ is his homage to those times, when the docks were still awash with industry and colour.

His graphic design work sees him reduce concept and narratives down to the simplest of forms whilst using vibrant colour palettes and the mural brings together those little snapshots he remembers as a kid.

The fish boxes stacked up, port and starboard markings, nautical flags, floats and funnels, smokehouse cowls, life rings, lock gates, compass rose and serial codes. These sit amongst the colours of the trawlers, baby blue, browns and red oxides.

The nautical flag for E is a blue rectangle above a red rectangle which is your starter to decipher the wording on the bottom section :)

He also likes the fact that the mural is visible from the train and adds a pop of colour into an area where it’s now lacking.

The harsh environment will take it’s toll on the mural and he's intrigued to see how it weathers and fades over time and beds down into it’s location, becoming an echo itself.

Finally, the 272 is the number of his Dads old trawler that he would take out in all weathers to keep a roof over their heads and put food on the table. They sadly lost him 2 years ago so this is a little nod to him and for starting Sean on his design journey all those years ago.
